The Roof, the Roof, the Roof is on Fire

When we moved into this house, one of the things that the kids were the most excited about was that it came with a little portable firepit on the front patio. They have been hounding me to use it, and the boys have also been begging me to buy them matches. I told them that they could play with fire as long as the fire department doesn't end up called, and the house doesn't burn down, and finally got them some lighters to use today. Despite all of their initial enthusiasm, Camden gave up trying to start a fire pretty quickly. Jared kept at it, and did eventually start a fire that enabled the kids to spend a sunny afternoon roasting miniature marshmallows.

Emilia and her BFF took over the fire tonight and roasted grapes (they said they were yummy and some of them exploded!) and apples, and burned all of Emilia's old school papers... and her old math book. That's right, we're apparently now burning books around here. Alrighty then.

Meanwhile, Jared installed the Windows 8 Consumer Preview today and spent most of the day downloading drivers and reading various forums and telling me all about it. You know your kid is a geek when you log on to the computer and see this...

He's got a few app ideas, and he's already written a program or two, so maybe he'll have something available for Android or Win Mobile soon! Meanwhile, I was walking through the living room the other day and his Lego Mindstorms robot thing detected me and started shooting me.

Yesterday evening, I found myself on the Eastside and Charlotte wanted some mama/daughter alone time so we ended up heading to Red Robin for dinner. I will never stop loving their cheese sticks, I can tell you that. It was fun to hang out alone with Charlotte, and it seriously boggled my mind when the bill came and it was $14. Let's just say that never happens in my world!

My dad came over yesterday and hung out with us, and also helped me finish up some of the projects around the house. Well, okay, did them. I am capable of doing some basic stuff with a drill and such, but it was nice to sit back and just let him go to town. I'm pretty much done with the babies' room now, other than their mobiles. Both of them somehow broke in our move, so I'm planning to hang all of the birds from the ceiling individually. For now, we just stuck a mobile on an existing hook since they love those things!

It was kind of funny because, during the bookshelf hanging process, we discovered that the floor isn't level. It reminded me of a curtain hanging debacle in my old house where I discovered the same thing after measuring perfectly and ending up with a completely bizarre looking curtain rod. I love older homes, but you definitely do end up with some interesting challenges! Also, the wood in this house is like concrete! Good luck getting anything into these walls without a drill.

For pretty much her entire life, Emilia has periodically slept in my bedroom. She is a pretty sound sleeper, and is capable of sleeping through a pretty epic amount of noise. This morning, all four of the littles were playing in the playroom right next to my bedroom and even wandering through it to go into Alice and Charlotte's room, and even sitting RIGHT NEXT to Emilia and talking, and she still didn't wake up. I tried to get Lydia to sit on Emilia's head, but this was the closest that she got!

Charlotte says some of the funniest things that I have ever heard. Today's gem was: "This is egg juice but it tastes like coconut and pickles" when we were playing kitchen with the babies. Egg juice? Coconut? WHAT?! I love it!

So far, we've been rocking this whole dog thing. Mostly because Emilia is a rockstar doggy parent. I mean, we all help out, but Emilia is definitely the one in charge where he is concerned. She calls him her baby and rocks him to sleep, patting his butt, on her shoulder at night before bed. I kid you not.

Other than the fact that he is currently trying to hump everything, including the bunny, Milo is a pretty awesome dog, too! His vet said not to get him fixed until closer to 6 months, so I guess we are just going to need to embrace the whole humping thing for a few more months.

The girls love dressing up these days. Half the time, it's as butterflies or dragons, but sometimes it's princesses, too. Guess which dress I bought and which one James bought? Okay, that was too easy.
